BEAR, THE INVISIBLE TOURIST OF THE BÜKK

We would like to inform the public that two sightings of brown bears have taken place in the last week in the area of the Bükk National Park Directorate.

The camera trap operated by the Directorate recorded a relatively large brown bear on 24.07.2023, the footage of which is available on the Youtube channel of the Beech National Park Directorate:

The other sighting is related to a report from a resident: on 29.07.2023, hikers spotted a bear cub in the central part of the Bükk, at the village boundary of Szilvásvárad. The occurrence was confirmed by the Nature Conservation Service of the Bükk National Park Directorate.

We regret to see that recently a lot of information about brown bears has appeared in the written press and social media, which is based on assumptions and does not reflect the facts. For more than a year, we have been finding signs of life that attest to the brown bear's continuous presence in the Bükk, but since then, foresters have not reported any direct encounters with the animal, which clearly confirms that the bear avoids human proximity.

The Directorate is investigating the reported brown bear sightings. It has been established that individuals of the species move in the area of the Bükk and Uppony mountains. This was reported in our news item on a similar subject a week ago and has been confirmed by the latest sightings.
For correct information, please visit our website, where you can also find more information on the rules of behaviour for brown bears.
In case of sightings of brown bears, we ask the public to contact the Directorate first, as all substantiated reports (with precise location and possibly photos) will be investigated in the field.
Our central and emergency telephone number is +36 30 861-3808.

The bear is not a toy!
