October 6 is the International Geodiversity Day, celebrated worldwide by UNESCO. In order to Conserve the Past and Sustain the Future, the rich repository of the geological heritage of the transnational, Slovak-Hungarian Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark will also join the event. On the traditional geotope days, October 5th and 12th, from the state border area to Ipolytarnóc and from Sámsonháza to Szentkút, it organizes many exciting and unconventional geotours into the world of volcanoes of the past.

The 20 year-old Global Geoparks Network's regional members, the Hungarian UNESCO Global Geoparks will celebrate the European Geoparks Week between May 18 and June 2, 2024 to commemorate the geological heritage of our old continent.

The International Geodiversity Day (October 6) proclaimed by UNESCO at the 41st General Conference in 2021 is a worldwide celebration to recognise the many aspects of the geoheritage of our Globe. This special day is promoted by the Hungarian Geoparks as well.

The UNESCO Global Geoparks Council accepted 16 applications from prospective UNESCO Global Geoparks during the first meeting of its 8th session, organized under the auspices of M’Goun UNESCO Global Geopark in Marrakesh, Morocco, on 4 and 5 September 2023. The Bükk-Region Geopark is preparing for the 10th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks. The conference will be held in Marrakesh, a royal city of Morocco, from 7-9 September. It will be hosted by the UNESCO Global Geopark M'goun in Morocco, which is making history, as this is the first time a UNESCO Global Geoparks Conference will be held on the continent.

After the visit from our colleagues from the Hateg Country Geopark at the beginning of August, two colleagues from the working organisation of the Bükk-Region Geopark could participate in a two-day study trip to the Hateg Country UNESCO Global Geopark.

BEAR, THE INVISIBLE TOURIST OF THE BÜKKWe would like to inform the public that two sightings of brown bears have taken place in the last week in the area of the Bükk National Park Directorate.

On the initiative of the Volcanic Working Group of the European Geoparks Network (EGN), a special volume including the domestic UNESCO Global Geoparks was published on the volcanism and geotourism potential of our old continent's geoparks.

In the last six months, several reports of brown bears have been published in the area of the Bükk National Park Directorate. During the investigation of the presumed occurrences, we mostly did not find any traces confirming the presence of the species, but rather fresh life traces of other mammal species.

The extremely diverse volcanic heritage of the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark has been popularized by the latest study by Professor Szabolcs Harangi in the Geoconservation Research Journal.

With this title, Professor László Kordos gave his presentation to the workers of the Ipolytarnóc Fossils Nature Reserve.

The transnational Slovak-Hungarian Novohrad-Nógrád Geopark, which spans national borders, received an official UNESCO recognition. It can proudly bear the title of UNESCO Global Geopark for another 4 years.

The Bükk National Park Directorate and the Štátna ochrana prójdy Slovenskej republiky (State Nature Protection Office of the Slovak Republic) organized the "Together we protect nature" competition on May 31, 2023, on the Slovak side of the Somoskő castle, in accordance with traditions dating back several years in the transnational, Slovak-Hungarian Geopark.

The geopark networks of the V4 countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia) - at the initiative of the Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic and the Slovak Environment Agency - signed a declaration of intent for cooperation („Memorandum of Cooperation among the Visegrad Group Geoparks“) at an international meeting held in Banská Štiavnica (Selmecbánya) on May 10, 2023.

Due to the increase in the Carpathian brown bear (Ursus arctos) population and the changes in their habitats in recent years, we have been detecting more and more often signs of brown bears in the Bükk National Park Directorate's operational area. The range of the Carpathian bear population has reached the limits of the species' native habitats.
