On the initiative of the Volcanic Working Group of the European Geoparks Network (EGN), a special volume including the domestic UNESCO Global Geoparks was published on the volcanism and geotourism potential of our old continent's geoparks.
The 14 studies of the special issue of the Geoconservation Research journal (Volume 6, No. 1) were written by internationally renowned volcanologists and geopark specialists for the wider public, individual articles can be downloaded here.
Europe is home to many active volcanoes and volcanic monuments that provide valuable insight into the dynamic history of our planet. From volcanic mountains to lunar-like lava lakes, from peculiar rock formations to geothermal phenomena, these sites are not only geological curiosities and often iconic places for tourists, but also significant for scientific research and cultural heritage. They are also interwoven with the myths of humanity, as can be seen in the ancient world of Ipolytarnóc preserved by a supervolcanic eruption.
Recognizing their importance, the protection and preservation of geological heritage and volcanic landscapes became a priority. The study volume provides an insight into the key European UNESCO Global Geoparks that are repositories of volcanoes and volcanological phenomena, with particular regard to their scientific significance, geoconservation strategies and emerging aspects of nature conservation, education and geotourism.
A Vulkáni Munkacsoport katalizátorának (prof. João Carlos Nunes) előszavával kiegészített különkötet összefoglaló anyaga pedig itt érhető el. A tanulmánykötet előzménye az EGN Vulkanológiai Munkacsoport 2022-ben megjelent népszerűsítő kiadványa volt, mely megalapozta a a folyóiratban most publikált cikkgyűjteményt. A Novohrad-Nógrád Geoparkról szóló tanulmányról már korábban hírt adtunk, a Bakony-Balaton Geopark anyaga pedig közvetlenül innen tölthető le.
Geoparkjaink földtani, vulkanológiai értékeinek jelentős része olyan országos védelem alatt áll, mely a bemutatást is szolgálja. Nógrádban a Bükki Nemzeti Park Igazgatóság több tanösvényt épített ki megismerésükre, A felfedező túrát az ősi tűzhányók uralta, határokon átnyúló geopark beléptető kapujánál, az Ipolytarnóci Ősmaradványoknál érdemes elkezdeni, jó vulkáni kalandozást!
